Cairns Performing Arts Centre Projects
Project Owner: Cairns Regional Council
Client: FKG Group
Project Value: $120 million
The Cairns Performing Arts Centre (CPAC) forms part of a planned upgrade to the performing arts district in the centre of Cairns.
CPAC had been built on an existing site that once housed the three-storey-high Cairns Civic Theatre. The new centre had a footprint three times the size of the original Civic Theatre building, requiring significant water management.
Dewatering systems were set up to ensure water levels were drawn down from 1.2 metres below ground level to 7.0 metres below ground level through a combination of well pointing and sump pumping.
Extracted water was treated for pH through a custom built chemical dosing unit, which ensured EPA requirements were met and exceeded.
Works on site ran seven days a week with 24 hour monitoring set up to account for active under ground springs being fed from a lower aquifer. Regular interaction from other contractors kept the team busy with ongoing repairs and maintenance of the installed system, with a strong result allowing for the project to progress on budget and on schedule.
